As part of our advanced training to become state-certified automation technicians specializing in process automation, we were given the task of expanding the functionality of an existing production facility.

The system consists of a circular conveyor belt connecting a loading station with two production cells. A carrier, equipped with a spice dispenser, packaging, and a whistle holder, is placed on the conveyor belt at the loading station. The carrier is fed into the system by pressing a start button.

In the first production cell, the spice dispenser can be filled with salt, pepper, or a mixture of both spices, depending on the selection. The desired mixing ratio is individually set via a touch control panel.

The second production cell assembles a whistle, consisting of two housing parts and a ball. This function is also selected in advance via the control panel.

Our project goal is to add a bypass system to the facility. This will allow the carrier to pass through the two cells without being processed—for example, for testing or transport purposes.

In addition, the communication between the main control system and the first production cell will be revised and improved to increase the system's reliability and efficiency. Furthermore, the operation and visualization on the touch panel will be adapted. As part of the project, existing programming errors will also be analyzed and corrected to ensure trouble-free plant operation.
